Texting Technology

I started texting long before most adults in America did. I had one of the first cell phones, it weighed about 40 pounds and came with a shoulder strap. It was a fabulous invention and I determined immediately that it was a necessary part of my life. As soon as it became practical, all of my kids had cell phones too, so that I could let them know when they would be waiting in the parking lot at school after soccer practice for me for an hour. Texting was a huge improvement! I found I could text Jamie and Kristi and Jolene during the school day and if nothing was going on in their classes I could pick them up and we could head to the mall! I was the first mom on the block to text, so early that in school they could actually tell their teachers "It's from my mom!" and the teachers would go ahead and let them text!

All this aside, I have never really gotten any better at texting than I was at the beginning! I am much too impatient. I use T-9, so the phone chooses the word it thinks I am spelling. But I just text up the message and send it off, NEVER stopping to proofread or advance the word choice to the word I actually need. My children have adjusted to this quite nicely, and it is their job to figure out just exactly what mom meant to say in her text.

This week, I sent Jolie the BEST TEXT EVER! Tuesday, I needed to feed about 30 missionaries lunch, and got off to a late start at home. I asked Jolie if she would stop at the butcher and pick up the meat and cheese for the sandwiches for me. She agreed, and I told her that I would text her what I needed her to buy. Later, I sent this text message to her:

"3 sounds turkey 3 sounds ibm 3 sounds smart beef 4 sound american cheese 4 sounds protalone and the paper slaves in the closet in fads office at noon i love you"

Technology is simply fabulous!

  2. You should read whenparentstext.com. Hilarious! And I'm always surprised by how cute other people's parents are.

Do you have any pictures of your shoulder strap phone??

  3. Ha! That is the best text message! I miss T9, it was so much faster than qwerty texting. I just about wet myself laughing at websites of autocorrect mistakes.
