June 21, 2013 - I Only Lost One!

In my three years as a mission mama, I have kept a pretty good track record.  I have only made a few MAJOR misdiagnoses, like our recent Elder who called back in the middle of the night, saying, "The blessing didn't work!"  We sent him to the ER for an appendectomy.  Until my very last transfer meeting, I had not lost a single missionary.  But this time, I lost one.  I'd like to claim it wasn't my fault.  But it sort of was.  We got all those adorable new Elders in on Tuesday night, and fed them and chatted the night away.  Wednesday morning, I got breakfast in the slow cooker, and headed to the train station to pick up more new missionaries.  During a quick stop back at the mission home before I headed to the mission office, one of the new Elders came to me, looking like death warmed over and complaining of being sick.  I told him to go back to bed.  That was the last time I thought of him.  WE LEFT HIM!!  We totally left him at the mission home, asleep and sick as a dog in a back bedroom of the basement of my house and went to the transfer meeting.  He didn't have a companion or anything!  I didn't even realize he was lost until we started counting heads for some reason at transfers.  I lost a new missionary!  When it came to assign trainers, we had Elder Robinson left over, and nobody for him to train, because I lost his missionary!
You cannot even imagine how bad I felt!  When we got home, about 6 hours later, we found that he really was very, very sick.  He hadn't even gotten out of bed all day, and hardly knew we had left him.  We found him, and united him with a trainer.  If I wasn't already going home, I would probably have been fired for this.  Welcome to the mission, Elder Eppel.
We hope that Elder Robinson takes better care of you than you mission mama did!  Elder Robinson and Elder Eppel will be serving together in the Holladay Zone of the Utah Salt Lake City East Mission.
I really am very sorry.
